Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Unveiled; Powered by Groundbreaking AI

Qualcomm today unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, successor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The new chipset brings a host of new updates to Qualcomm’s premium tier. It will be used to power mobile devices of manufacturers including ASUS ROG, HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, RedMagic, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, XINGJI/MEIZU, and ZTE. Devices equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC will start to roll out to consumers by the end of this year.

"The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform is intelligently engineered with groundbreaking AI across the board to enable truly extraordinary experiences," according to Qualcomm. "We’ve also brought AI to the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem RF System with the first and only 5G AI processor in a modem-RF system, making this the most advanced mobile connectivity platform ever. And, we’re not stopping there—this platform’s camera is powered by the industry’s very first Cognitive ISP enabling ingenious capture, with real-time Semantic Segmentation for photo and video optimizations," the company added.

Premium Features Coming to Phones

Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm said,""We are passionate about enabling people to do more, so we design Snapdragon with the user at the center. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will revolutionize the landscape of flagship smartphones in 2023. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 delivers ground breaking AI, unparalleled connectivity, and champion-level gameplay, enabling consumers to enhance every experience on their most trusted device."

The chipset will be produced by TSMC using its 4nm process node. Calling the SoC "groundbreaking AI" Qualcomm says that the chipset will deliver AI performance up to 4.35x times faster than the previous chipset. This is also the first Qualcomm SoC to support an AI-powered always sensing camera.

The chip "uses an AI neural network to make the camera contextually aware of faces, facial features, hair, clothes, skies and more –and optimize them individually so every detail receives customized professional image tuning."

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 employs 64-bit architecture with one Prime core (Cortex-X3) clocking a speed of 3.2GHz. There are four performance cores that will run at a clock speed up to 2.8GHz, and the chip contains three Efficiency cores running at a clock speed up to 2.0GHz.

Qualcomm has installed latest upgraded version of the Adreno GPU for 25% faster performance. There is also the Kryo CPU to improve the power efficiency up to 40%. The chip maker called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the most advanced 5G platform with "unparalleled connectivity from 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth."

The idea of making instruments other than harpsichord was very interesting. Growing is an important word in the world of instrument making. My inspiration was the physicist who encouraged me to develop my own work and given my background working with two very different makers. And i love to present my work to others and share my experiences.
