Canon has announced the launch of a new virtual reality (VR) video production system. The EOS VR System will accompany mirrorless cameras, a dedicated lens, and computer software. "With the increasing market demand for VR, Canon is leveraging on our optical technologies nurtured through the development and production of the EOS interchangeable lens camera system, to establish a new VR video production system that realizes high-quality images alongside an efficient production workflow," according to the DSLR maker.
The EOS VR System is fitted with an RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens to produce a parallax effect that can be used to create 3D 180-degree VR images. The lens when attached to the EOS R5 mirrorless camera will enable the camera’s 8K recording capabilities to produce high-definition imagery.
Both the lenses are equipped with an Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) that controls the aperture diameter. The f/2.8 maximum aperture allows the cameraperson to capture bright, high-quality images. The model is also fitted with a highly sensitive CMOS image sensor and powerful noise processing capabilities to achieve high-quality footage even in low light conditions.
The lens will be available in late December 2021, and the price of the device will be announced closer to launch. Reportedly, the EOS VR utility software and EOS VR Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro will be released in late December via a subscription service. "The VR imaging system will be exhibited at the Canon booth at InterBEE 2021 that will be held in an online-offline hybrid from 17 November (Wed) to 19 November (Fri) 2021," Canon revealed.
