Fitbit and Northwestern University engineers collaborated to develop a new smart face mask- 'Facebit' or 'Fitbit for the face'.
Since the year 2020, face masks of different types; from cloth masks to N95 masks are quite in demand. The pandemic also pushed innovators and engineers to deploy emerging technology to create smart products that make things easier.
This 'Fitbit for the face' a.k.a Facebit — smart face mask — uses sensor technology that can monitor your heartbeat through your face. Using quarter-sized sensors attached to the mask through tiny magnets, this smart face mask can sense the real-time respiration rate, heart rate, and wear time.
Moving on, the lead designer of this face mask Josiah Hester from Northwestern University stated that he and his team wanted to make an intelligent mask for healthcare professionals. This intelligent face mask doesn't require to be plugged in the middle of the shift. And this benefits healthcare staff and doctors, as they can focus completely on their care delivery. Further, he added that the batteries' energy is harvested from different sources. So, this implies that the user can wear this mask for a week without charging it frequently.
Moreover, the recent research on this smart face mask reveals that its accuracy is almost similar to clinical-grade devices. And its battery can go on for 11 days with some charges. Further, there are more to Facebit. Keep reading to know more about this intelligent, smart face mask.
Fit Test
Before developing the product, Hester and his team approached various healthcare professionals to understand their requirements for face masks. We all know that doctors and nurses worked for long hours amidst the contagion. And as per their survey, most clinicians wanted better quality and good fit masks. Healthcare professionals are quite concerned particularly about the fit of the mask. Typically, healthcare staff undergoes a fit test before actually starting off with their work. This fit test checks any sort of leaks and ensures whether the mask is properly sealed or not. However, the Facebit mask transforms this a bit and alerts the wearer in case there's a leak. Sensing dip in resistance, the sensor technology in the mask alerts the user to protect them from infections.

Face Centric Bio-Sensing
Facebit masks can do a lot more than to just offer a great fit. In other words, it senses your respiratory and heart rates. And this helps wearers understand more about their bodies and make informed health decisions. Besides, these health information data related to heart rate, respiratory vitals, and fit of the mask are all available on the smartphone app. However, the most interesting aspect of this mask is that it can sense physiological changes under stressful events. And immediately alert the user to take a break or prompt them to calm down. This feature is really great for hospital staff, as the data will indicate them to sense the pressure. Also, it will indicate whether the staff needs a break or not.

Battery-Free In The Future
Hester and his team aim to make Facebit smart face mask battery-free in the future. This battery-free technology will make the Fitbit for the face more sustainable. Moreover, it's through the wearer's breathing, physical movements, and solar energy that the mask's battery will get its power.
So, with the aim of sustainable, comfortable, and better health monitoring, Facebit or Fitbit for the Face will hit the markets.
