On the heels of the Android 12 launch, Google has announced Android 12L, an upgraded version with better features. The upgraded version is optimized for large screen devices including tablets, foldables, and ChromeOS devices.
"In 12L we have refined the UI to make Android more beautiful and easier to use on screens larger than 600sp — across notifications, quick settings, lock screen, overview, home screen, and more," according to the developers' website. The new update will include features like a two-column layout for notification shade and lock screen, and an improved multitasking experience among others.
Android 12L is not a new version of android. It can be considered as a new feature that is added to Android 12. Therefore, Android 12 devices will be called Android 12 and not 12L. Google named the update specifically to cite the importance of the update.
Android will reformat the notification drop down to a two-column layout when visible on screens, with a 600dp or higher. There will be a new easier-to-use split-screen feature that will allow users to easily run two apps simultaneously. There is a new taskbar that appears below the screen which can be dragged and dropped to the right-hand side or the left-hand side of the screen.
“For foldables, you’ll see many of these features including Activity Embedding coming soon to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, 5G Factory Unlocked Android Cell Phone,” stated Google during its presentation. “Activity embedding lets you take advantage of the extra display area of large screens by showing multiple activities at once, such as for the List-Detail pattern, and it requires little or no refactoring of your app,” the tech giant added.
Android 12L will only be released in 2022. The first developer preview of the12L is available today on the Android emulator. The developer previews will also be made available on Pixel phones as well.click here!
