Samsung Galaxy Z Slide - a Double Folding Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Z Slide

Samsung is still leading the foldable smartphone market. The South Korean tech giant was granted a patent to develop a double-folding phone called the Galaxy Z Slide rollable smartphone.

As spotted by LetsGoDigital, Samsung was awarded a patent for a smartphone featuring three sections that can fold in a Z shape. "Due to the Z form factor, it is not necessary to implement a separate front display. The phone can be folded in such a way that the first display part of the flexible screen will form the front screen – in folded position," stated the report.

The design of Galaxy Z Slide will sport a primary display with an in-display fingerprint sensor. None of the current foldable phones in the smartphone arena has an in-display fingerprint sensor. The rear of the camera houses a triple camera array. When unfolded completely, the phone can become a small tablet. The foldable will accompany an S Pen. The phone will also feature a USB-C connection, an HDMI port, an audio connector, and an SD card compartment.  It will be possible to connect a keyboard, mouse, and/or an external microphone to the double foldable.

"It is a foldable smartphone that consists of three display parts. The phone can be folded into a Z-shape. In other words, you fold one display part backwards, the other forwards. To make this possible, two different types of hinges are used; an in-fold and an out-fold hinge," writes the report.

"In the unfolded position, the user has a large tablet-sized display at his disposal, in order to be able to work extra productively. When folded, the device has the same dimensions (WxH) as a regular telephone – because there are three display parts on top of each other, the telephone is significantly thicker and heavier," added the report.

Samsung Electronics has filed several patents related to this foldable phone in the past. Last month Samsung patented a Samsung tri-fold smartphone with reverse wireless charging.

In May, Samsung Display, the company's display division, introduced a prototype of Galaxy S-Foldable with a double hinge, which could be folded inwards and outwards. A few months later, Samsung Display presented a working prototype of the phone. This design shares many common features with the device filed for under the current patent.

The foldable segment of the smartphone arena is getting increasingly noticed. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is garnering excellent sales figures around the world. According to a report from Strategy Analytics, Samsung likely sold about 1.02 million foldables in 2019 and 2020 combined in the US.

Even though foldable phones came into the market a few years ago, it is still new for consumers. The main attraction of a foldable phone is its flexibility. It is a device that can be positioned between a smartphone and a tablet.

Samsung is not the only company to come up with a dual-hinge foldable. Electronics manufacturer, TCL had revealed a concept for a foldable, which folded and unfolded in the shape of a Z back in 2019. Besides, OnePlus patented a dual-hinge foldable phone that has three screens last month.
