Behringer C-2 Review 2022

Although Behringer is famous for making quality high-end equipment, the company is also well-known for offering tempting budget gear. The Behringer C-2 is perhaps one of the best examples of this.

For the budget price, you actually get two condenser microphones, which is already tempting, to say the least. This, along with the fact that Behringer is a big-deal company in the world of music would definitely incline a music pro and aficionado to look into this model.

First of all, as mentioned, with the Behringer C-2 small diaphragm condenser model, you get two microphones, which is a useful setting for quality stereo recording. The aim here was affordability topped with quality and stereo recording possibilities, and the people at Behringer have certainly managed to excel here. These units have been around for some time now, which is definitely not a bad thing. The fact that they are still in production vouches for their quality.

Who is Behringer C-2 for?

Although they do come at a cheap price, this doesn’t mean that they are aimed at beginners. The fact that the C-2 comes in pairs emphasizes this: It enables the user to record in stereo, which isn’t something beginners get into as soon as they start in music recording. As for the price, it’s very affordable, especially considering the fact you get two quality condenser microphones.

The Behringer C-2 is small, convenient, and simple to use. Making the mics work in unison isn’t difficult because they are easy to place owing to their size. In fact, some artists use these live, despite the fact that condenser microphones are generally intended for studio use. In the studio, they are perfect for recording voice, instruments, and even drums, all thanks to their wide frequency range.

This is not a feature that many condenser microphones offer, seeing as many more expensive models come with a transport bag, rather than a hardshell case. The cardboard package itself includes only the hardshell case, inside of which you’ll find the actual microphone, in addition to the user manual, and several other features.

You get two small mic mounts which fit on both 5/8” and 3/8” mike stands. An accessory that many professional condenser mics don’t include for some reason is the windshield, making it really hard to come by one that fits these perfectly. This is not the case with the C-2, as they come with two windshields, to fit both of the mics from the package. You also get a stereo bar for XY stereo recording.

Compact as they are, the Behringer C-2 mics are equipped with some very professional hardware.

These are small diaphragm condenser mics that cover frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is more than a decent range. This means that you can use them even for bass drum recording, as the low frequencies in drum bass start at around 20Hz.

A max SPL of 14dB and the built-in -10dB attenuation feature mean that they can take quite a punch loudness-wise, which is why they can be seen used on stage by some artists.

The C-2 encompasses the FET circuitry, meaning that you can expect fairly low noise during use. The mics use XLR cables (not included in the packaging) and an audio interface with phantom power, which has become a standard.

How to use

With this hardware setup, you get a pair of mics that are capable of providing very strong performance, so no, you won’t regret the purchase, especially if you look at the price. The fact that they come in pairs means that you get a lot of flexibility, so it is recommended that you use them in unison for best results. Use them for quality stereo studio recording or in live sessions on instruments that they work well on.

Recording vocals with these is entirely possible and some producers choose them for certain vocal types, but where these really shine are loud acoustic instruments, like guitars, drums, violins, etc.

Alternatives

If you’re looking for a similarly priced mic that works better than the C-2 when it comes to vocals, then the Shure SM57 might be a better fit for you. Keep in mind, however, that the SM57 is a dynamic microphone that works great with vocals in the studio but doesn’t do the trick with other instruments, especially not compared to the Behringer C-2. It’s a bit more expensive, too, and you only get one mic instead of the two you get with the C-2.

If you’re looking for an alternative, the Samson C02 is very similar to the Behringer C-2. Although you do get a pair of mics along with two mic stands and XLR cables, they are almost double the price, don’t feature a hardshell case, and, most importantly, they won’t provide you with the audio quality that the C-2 will.

Conclusion

The Behringer C-2 mics are fantastic microphones that come at an incredibly reasonable price. For around $60, you get a pair of excellently built, great-sounding small diaphragm condenser mics that can be used for recording everything from vocals to drums. Every producer should have a pair of these in their studio.
