Folding phones

The early days of flip phones, foldable or folding phones, and flexible displays, in general, are difficult to pinpoint. A few businesses were developing their own approaches to the technology. Samsung is one of the firms that showed what living on a foldable screen may be like.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold was the first foldable phone to enter the market. The Galaxy Fold series is the quintessential application of foldable phones, with a phone that folds out to become a tablet. Not long after that announcement, Huawei appeared on the scene with the Mate X, its foldable phone.

If you are planning to get your hands on the perfect folding phone, then take a look at our picks for the best folding phones of 2022:

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung Galaxy Fold

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G is a smartphone intended to allow you to speak, work, and play at 5G speeds.  The Dynamic AMOLED display provides amazing visuals and expands to twice in size, giving you a tablet-like viewing experience.  It's simple to watch your work or media at any time of day thanks to a high contrast ratio, adaptive 120 Hz refresh rate, and blue-light control.

Besides, with a front-facing camera lens that is hardly visible under the screen, the new Under Display Camera provides an unparalleled unobstructed view. With desirable multitasking features and a groundbreaking S Pen built for the foldable display, can take your virtual job to a new level of productivity.

With Flex Mode, you can take photos and videos with complete flexibility, and even make hands-free video calls so you can speak without interrupting your work. This smartphone can withstand long days right by you, with 25W Super Fast Charging so you never have to halt for a charge. Now with 5G nationwide coverage and 5G Ultra Wideband performance that is unrivaled.

Huawei Mate X

Huawei Mate X

The Huawei Mate X is the world's first folding phone to enable 5G. On the outside, there is an 8-inch OLED panel. When folded, the gadget has a 6.6-inch display on the front and a 6.3-inch panel on the back. Huawei's newest Kirin 980 processor powers the Mate X. It comes with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. The camera on the gadget was created in partnership with Leica. The sensors are 40 MP (wide-angle lens) + 16 MP (ultra-wide-angle lens) + 8 MP (telephoto).

The device's distinctive Falcon Wing hinge allows it to seamlessly transition between smartphone and tablet mode. The Mate X also includes a unique bar handle for improved handling. The Mate X has an 8-inch flexible OLED screen with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels. When the phone is folded, you can access a 6.6-inch screen on the front and a 6.3-inch display on the back. This foldable device is powered by Huawei's newest Kirin 980 processor, which is built on 7 nm manufacturing technology.

The processor has four Cortex A76 cores and four Cortex A55 cores. The Mali-G76MP10 GPU is in charge of gaming. The device has 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. The foldable phone from Huawei is powered by a 3,500 mAh battery. Say goodbye to long charging periods because this device comes with a 55W power converter. The Huawei Mate X is a 5G smartphone that can also connect to 4G VoLTE networks.

Vivo X Fold

Vivo X Fold

Vivo's X Fold debuted just a few months after Oppo, a sister company, released the much-anticipated Oppo Find N. At the moment, the Vivo X Fold comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Vivo X Fold is an inward folding tablet with a 6.53-inch AMOLED display on the front that unfolds to show a larger 8.03-inch folded display. The exterior display has the same size as a standard smartphone. Both panels on the smartphone are AMOLED with a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10 support. In addition, the device's LTPO2 screen has a dynamic refresh rate that ranges between 1Hz and 120Hz. Schott's Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), which is also utilized in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, is used in Vivo's next foldable handset.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer claimed that the hinge had 300,000 folds. The X Fold is also the first smartphone to use a twin 3D ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner, according to the company. The cover display is a 6.53-inch Samsung E5 panel with a resolution of 1,080x2,520 pixels. Both displays have a refresh rate of 120Hz.

The folding Vivo phone is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, Adreno 730 GPU, and 12GB LPDDR5 RAM. A 50MP main sensor with an OIS-enabled f/1.75 lens, a 48MP ultra-wide shooter, a 12MP portrait sensor, and an 8MP periscope-style super-telephoto lens comprises the quad rear camera configuration. In addition, the gadget has a 16MP selfie camera sensor with an f/2.45 lens.

Oppo Find N

Oppo Find N

Oppo Find N, the company's first folding phone, made its premiere at Oppo Inno Day 2021. The Oppo phone includes a water drop hinge, which reduces the crease in the center, which is a common complaint with foldable phones. Aside from that, the Find N is a high-end phone with a flagship Snapdragon 888 engine, a triple camera arrangement on the back, a fast refresh rate LTPO AMOLED display, and is smaller than other foldables on the market. For the time being, the Oppo Find N is only available in China and costs CNY 7699 for the base model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage and CNY 8999 for the 12GB/512GB storage option.

The Oppo Find N has an unfolded thickness of 8mm and a folded thickness of 15.6mm. The frame is composed of aluminum and weighs 275 grams. For extra protection, the phone's front and back are coated in Gorilla Glass Victus. Oppo Find N offers a huge 7.1-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 1920x1792 pixel resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ compatibility, and a punch-hole notch cutout for the front camera. The 5.49-inch cover AMOLED display has a resolution of 1972x988 pixels and is protected by Gorilla Glass. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 660 GPU powers the Oppo Find N.

The Find N also has dual speakers, WiFi 6 compatibility, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and other features. It includes a 4,500mAh battery that can charge at 33W fast wired, 15W fast wireless, and 10W reverse charging.

Years of research and development into flexible screen technology have resulted in the creation of the foldable smartphone. Foldable or folding phones, which appeared to be a pipe dream throughout the 2010s, have made enormous strides on their long quest to become a cornerstone in modern technology. As we wait for the next big thing in foldable screen technology, more breakthroughs are on the way.
