iPod Discontinued: The End of an Era

iPod

Remember those days when we use to carry a tiny Apple device around to listen to music. Known as the iPod, this device is a favorite of millions of kids and adults who love to get lost in a sea of music. Since its launch in 2001, Apple has sold it to people around the globe with the sales figures reaching 450 million. According to reports, last year the company sold an estimated three million iPods which means the iPod mania still exists. People still love iPods and they are still a great music listening device.

The Origin of iPod

Apple created the iPod in an attempt to sell more Macintosh computers. The digital music player market started booming in the 1990s. Steve Jobs saw this as a business opportunity with immense potential and thought of it as a chance to give Apple’s computer business a modern appeal. A huge music fan himself, Jobs decided to dip into the huge market of music fans.

A few years later, iPod was born and soon became a music listener standard for travel and leisure. It was first introduced in the market in October 2001 and looked like a pocket-size rectangle with a white face and polished steel frame. It weighed a mere 6.5 ounces. It accompanies white earbuds/moon gray and held 1,000 songs. The first-generation iPod buyers had to pay up $399. This was a high price tag and the company could sell hardly 400,000 units in the first year.

Three years later, the electronics giant introduced the iPod Mini, a 3.6-ounce aluminum case in silver, gold, pink, blue and green colors. It costed $249 and hosted 1,000 songs. As soon as the prices lowered the sales figures shot through the roof and by September 2005, the company had sold 22.5 million units.

The 2000s witnessed the birth of an iPod generation, people with headphones plugged in clutching a tiny silver device. Pretty much anywhere you went you would be able to sight a head-banging person plugged into an iPod.

Apple took the iPod Mini a step ahead by rolling out iTunes for Windows Computers which brought in millions more users to buy iPods. After this move Jobs and his team made a smaller and more budget-friendly iPod skyrocketing the sales to 40 million over the next year. Another reason iTunes became popular was because it was a weapon against illegal music downloading that was rampant those days.

The End of an Era

Much to users’ chagrin, Apple has decided to discontinue iPod production. People are now proudly looking at the tiny device that they used to own and had forgotten a long time ago after phones came into the picture. Some people are saddened by the fact that they had misplaced or even thrown out the device a long time ago favoring their feature-rich phones.

Apple has assured its customers that the sales will continue until the supplies last. However, people might not be interested to buy as these products would be nearing their sell-by date.
