The home products company, Dyson, has announced the launch of a new headphone model, Dyson Zone that doubles as a personal air purifier. Labeled as "air-purifying headphones" this is the first wearable from the company that is well known for its vacuum cleaners. This headphone is designed to help city dwellers battle the high levels of air pollution.
The headphones look like they were inspired by Batman's Bane. With an eye-catching design and fitted with a visor that runs from ear to ear, it looks like a gadget lifted straight out of a sci-fi movie. The visor can be snapped off easily giving you normal-looking headphones, although a little bulky. The company says it took 6 years and over 500 prototypes to develop this sci-fi air purifier headphone.
“Air pollution is a global problem – it affects us everywhere we go. In our homes, at school, at work, and as we travel, whether on foot, on a bike, or by public or private transport. The Dyson Zone purifies the air you breathe on the move. And, unlike face masks, it delivers a plume of fresh air without touching your face, using high-performance filters and two miniaturized air pumps. After six years in development, we’re excited to deliver pure air and pure audio, anywhere," said Jake Dyson, Chief Engineer.
How Does the Dyson Zone Work?
The Dyson Zone sucks air through the ear cups in the headphones and passes it through a filtration system that is enclosed within the ear cups. The clean air is then delivered through a mesh section within the visor. The company uses electrostatic filtration technology that can capture 99% of particle pollutants as small as 0.1 microns, such as dust, pollen, and bacteria. There is also a potassium-enriched carbon filter that captures city gases like NO2, SO2, and O3.
There are then four purification modes; low, medium, high, and auto. Low is for when you are sitting down, medium for walking down a less crowded street, and high for crossing roads during the rush hour traffic amidst a crowd. Auto is to track breathing and exertion, using the accelerometers in the headphones, and switch between low, medium, and high modes.
Dyson Zone Audio
Dyson Zone is a noise-canceling headphone and also focuses on providing comfort. "[Dyson Zone]'s passive attenuation and the ANC, with its unique array of microphones, reduce unwanted environmental noise and motor tones to provide advanced noise cancellation at home, at work, and on-the-go. Large, angled ear cushions mold around the listener’s ear, with a foam density and headband clamp force engineered specifically for both comfort and optimal noise reduction" according to the Dyson blog.
There are three active noise cancellation modes; Isolation, Conversation, and Transparency. Isolation mode gives you the maximum level of active noise cancellation. When you snap off, your visor conversation mode is automatically activated, turning off the filtration system to save battery. Transparency mode is for when you want to listen to music but still be aware of what is going on around you. Double tapping the side of either ear cup will activate the transparency mode.
Although the air purifying technology has left the headphones bulky, the technology does sound promising and is much needed as the pollution levels are getting higher across the world.
